从接受美学视角看译者多重角色 ——以The Thorn Birds及其汉译本为例

论文摘要

翻译是一项有着数千年历史的人类文化实践活动。然而,从中西方翻译史来看,传统的翻译研究基本束缚在“忠实”和“对等”观念的下,几乎完全忽视了翻译活动中译者的主体性作用和角色。随着翻译研究从长期的语言学角度转向文化角度以及接受美学理论的诞生,译者在翻译过程中的能动作用及其多重角色逐渐凸显。学术界逐渐认识到,将接受美学与翻译相结合,便于我们全面考察和深入研究译者在翻译过程中的主体性能动作用。接受美学理论是以阐释学和现象学为理论基础的,其代表观点和主要概念为“审美经验的期待视野”、“视野融合”、“文本的召唤结构”和“审美距离”。两位主要代表人物姚斯和伊赛尔分别从宏观和微观方面对其进行了详细的阐述。姚斯的“期待视野”概念脱胎于海德格尔的“前理解”和伽达默尔的“视野”。姚斯认为,译者的“视野”在阅读中与原文本重合,在翻译创作中与原作者达到“视野融合”。伊赛尔提出了由“未定性”和“空白”组成的“文本的召唤结构”,他认为文学的具体接受就是指此“召唤结构”与读者的积极参与共同作用的过程。本文以接受美学理论为指导,以曾胡对澳大利亚小说The Thorn Birds的汉译本《荆棘鸟》为个案,探讨文学翻译中译者如何得体、恰当地把握自己须要扮演的多重角色,怎样充分发挥自己的主体性作用。研究发现,在翻译过程中,译者首先作为读者和接受者解读原作,与原作者进行沟通、交流,对原作“创造性”地接受,主动填补其中的意义“空白”,最大限度地求得自己的“期待视野”与原作者的“视野融合”;同时,作为重写者和演绎者,译者还须考虑目标读者的审美期待和需求,体量和“关照”目标读者,努力缩短译文文本跟目标读者之间的“审美距离”。然后,作为调解者和创作者,在翻译过程中,译者又是不同文化的中介。他(她)积极发挥自己的主体性和创造性,考虑原文本的词汇、句法、语篇、典故和文化精神以及译本应有的艺术风格和社会功能等等,在阅读的具体化中通过填补原作的“空白”和“未定点”创作译文文本,从而努力求得其中诸多美学因素在目标语文化语境的恰当“再现”和顺畅“接受”本论文在接受美学理论观照下,通过《荆棘鸟》中大量的例子分析、论证译者的能动性作用和多重角色,最终得出结论,在翻译的过程中,正是译者的主体性能动作用及其多重角色的出色扮演成就了《荆棘鸟》这一翻译文学经典。本论文通过总结对译者的素质要求和译者的能动性作用及其多重角色来提高和加强人们对文学翻译中的译者和文学翻译实践的认识和关注,希望可以从接受美学的视角进一步完善如何展现译者的能动性作用及其多重角色的理论框架:而从实践角度看,论文全方位分析了译者采用的翻译策略和方法,希望不仅可以对文学翻译研究与实践有些许贡献,而且能够为接受美学的视角再度审视文学翻译中的各种现象,对更加客观、全面、公允和科学地评价文学翻译文本提供有一定价值的参考意见,相信更多、更优秀的翻译文本亦将不断涌现。
