从阐释学角度看《边城》英译的译者主体性

论文摘要

作为中国乡土文化的经典著作,《边城》对中国文学和中国文化影响深远,是大陆文学家沈从文的代表作。其在当今中国乃至世界文学界上都占有非常重要地位,被誉为“一颗千古不磨的珠玉”。自出版以来,已被译成30多种语言,至今已出现了两个英译本:一个是金隄和Robert Payne合译的The Frontier City,另一个是戴乃迭译的The Border Town;由于原作具有丰富的文学价值与文化信息,对于这一文本,不同的译者有着不同的理解,又由于译者自身处于不同的历史文化背景,为了满足各自潜在读者和社会的需求而使用不同的翻译策略,因而表现出极大的译者主体性。译者主体性在中外翻译史上经历了蒙蔽到彰显的过程。传统译论中,译者地位和作用不受重视,处于边缘化地位。直到20世纪70年代出现的“文化转向”,译者的主体性研究得到了应有的重视,并逐渐走向深入,译者才渐渐从边缘地位走向了主体地位。长期以来,翻译理论家们把研究的重心都放在了翻译方法,标准,原则和原作等方面,忽略了译者的重大贡献,而阐释学可以很好地阐释译者的主体性发挥,为翻译研究提供新的视角,不仅扩展了翻译研究的领域,而且还深化了人们对译者的认识。本文以伽达默尔哲学阐释学为理论基础,运用“偏见”、“理解的历史性”、“视域融合”这三大原则对《边城》两个英译本中的译者主体性进行研究,从译者对原文本的选材,翻译中对语言、文化的处理等这几方面来进行比较分析,目的不在于评价孰优孰劣,而是重在揭示《边城》英译中体现的译者主体性。由于主体性的存在,不同的译者作为原文的读者,理解不尽相同;作为解析者,由于自身的知识背景以及参考资料的不同,对于特殊语言现象的处理选择不同;作为译者,由于翻译目的不同,采用的翻译方法也不同。戴乃迭翻译《边城》是为了向没有中国文化背景的西方读者传播地道的中国文化,所以她得翻译尽量采用异化的翻译策略并带有大量的注释;为了让西方读者很好地读懂并理解原文,金隄和Robert Payne采用归化的翻译策略。
