《勿失良辰》是索尔·贝娄著名的中篇小说之一。本文着眼于犹太文化和美国文化的双重语境,不仅揭示了犹太民族的生存困境,同时也揭示了整个西方社会人们的生存困境,这正是贝娄在《勿失良辰》中对世界文学做出的巨大贡献。从犹太文化层面来看,小说中几乎每个人物都处于身体和精神双重流放的状态并受到大屠杀意识的影响。从美国文化层面来看,主人公汤米是一个为自己的美国梦而奋斗但最后梦想破灭的典型人物。同时,爱默生思想中的个人主义精神,对灵魂、对过去与现在的看法影响着小说中的每一个人,在泰姆金身上体现得最为明显。文中论及了文化磨合同化,通过犹太文化与美国文化的冲突及文明与野蛮的冲突充分得以体现。文中最后揭示了《勿失良辰》的世界性。在《勿失良辰》的修正版本中,贝娄删去了犹太民族的标志—大卫之星,异化主题从作品人物生动地展现出来,从而得出结论:《勿失良辰》是超越民族的,揭示了人类普遍的生活窘境。
