唐·德里罗是活跃在当代美国文坛的杰出的后现代小说家,其作品涵盖现代美国社会的各个方面以及人类生存的种种危机。《白噪音》是德里罗的第八部小说。这部作品除去其对消费文化和大众媒体的犀利分析,也详细而深刻的描述了当代美国人的生存压力和信仰混乱。本文通过对《白噪音》中所呈现出的美国后现代社会的信仰混乱进行分析,从而对德里罗式的主人公以及他所创造出的社会有一个全新角度的了解。在《白噪音》中,由于无法忍受的生存压力,多数人都迫切的需要一种解救的力量以获得精神上的安宁。但是不幸的是,在这个新兴的情况下,传统的宗教信仰已经失去了其原有的功效。因此,人们急需一种真正可以解救他们的力量来使他们摆脱痛苦。在这里,任何一种可以使之摆脱恐惧的力量都可以被视为一种宗教信仰。宗教信仰变得从未有过的混乱。媒体冲击、科技侵袭、疯狂购物甚至是希特勒研究和恐怖主义教义都可以被归为这一类的信仰危机。作为一个杰出的小说家,德里罗形象的描绘出一幅挣扎在畸形的后现代社会的众生相。
