文学研究不能脱离揭示语言表现手段的语言学,语言学研究也离不开经过高度提炼加工的文学。如果把语言学和文学研究结合起来,就能更好地分析文学中人物会话的本质。关于英国19世纪著名女作家夏洛蒂·勃朗特经典小说作品《简·爱》的研究与评论不胜枚举,但从语用学角度探讨作品对话的研究很少。本文尝试从语用学的角度详细分析小说中个主人公的对话,属于跨语言学和文学的多学科研究。本文首先回顾了自十九世纪以来历代文学家、文艺批评家等对夏绿蒂.勃朗特和她的《简·爱》所做出的文学研究及批评,探讨了运用语用学理论研究《简·爱》的会话含义的可行性与必要性。本文使用的语用学理论和原理包括Grice的合作原则及会话含义准则,Brown与Levinson的礼貌理论和Leech的礼貌原则及准则,为之后三种小说对话分析提供了理论框架和研究工具。其中合作原则及其准则解释了话语的隐含之意,解释会话含义是如何产生和理解的,而礼貌原则则为我们提供了人们在言语交际中为何要含蓄地、间接地表达自己的思想。通过大量的分析比较,作者发现《简·爱》里有许多经典的使用间接表达的对话,表现出主人公往往违背合作原则之准则,采用迂回曲折的表达方式,以产生言外之意。作者认为本文一方面可以证实夏绿地·勃朗特小说创作的现实主义和女性意识,有助于拓展其传统的文艺批评和经久不衰的艺术魅力；另一方面证明了运用语用学理论对文学作品进行会话分析的有效性及其对小说深入理解及欣赏的启示。
